What happens if you drive on the wrong fuel

Gasoline in a diesel engine destroys the fuel pump, the injectors, and potentially the entire fuel system. Diesel fuel systems operate at extremely high pressures and the components are lubricated by the diesel fuel itself. Gasoline strips that lubrication and the metal-on-metal contact destroys parts that cost thousands to replace.

Diesel in a gasoline engine causes the engine to smoke heavily, misfire, and eventually stall. The catalytic converter can be damaged by unburnt diesel fuel, and the fuel injectors may clog. Less catastrophic than gas-in-diesel, but still expensive if you drive on it.
